Jake Toseland, assistant branch manager at Buildbase in Rushden, Northamptonshire, reviews Buildbase’s own-brand, Suregraft professional wood screws
What should you be looking for in a professional-quality wood screw?
Buildbase’s Suregraft wood screws are high-performing, zinc screws that can be used for a number of applications both internally and externally.
The screws are designed by Phillips Screw Company, a company specialising in high-performance drive systems not only for DIY and trade but also for industrial and aerospace. Their systems are used globally and a strict quality monitoring programme ensures they can always be trusted to do the job.
So what makes these screws high performance?
- They are made with a thicker core body for increased strength and hold in a wall plug.
- They have a self-drilling point that eliminates the need for time consuming pre-drilling and ensures a fast, direct fix into timber.
- The Suregraft screw has a unique ‘stick-fit’ feature: this includes a patent PoziSquare® recess in the head of the screw which gives a friction connection when used in conjunction with the free bit provided in the pack. Similar to a magnet, the bit grabs hold of the screw, allowing for a one-handed application, freeing the other hand to hold and position the object being fixed. The PoziSquare® recess also helps in preventing the bit dislodging, and bouncing back out of the screw (also known as ‘cam-out’).
Depending on the size of the screw, they are available in individual pack sizes of 50, 100 and 200 but there is also an 800-piece attaché case available, containing a selection of seven sizes.
The combination of the ‘stick-fit’ feature with the self-drilling point provides you with an efficient, easy-to-use method of fixing, without sacrificing quality and with sizes ranging from 16mm up to 100mm (3.5-6mm diameter) you can be sure to find one suitable for every application.
